Community Health Center, Inc. Working Towards Better Health for All
The
Community Health Center, Inc.'s
dedication building a
world class primary health care system, that is committed to caring
for special populations, and that is focused on improving health
outcomes for our patients as well as building healthy communities
grew
from the
experience of
CHC’s founder Mark Masselli in
his work with a 24-hour crisis center learning first hand
“...whatever
problems brought people to the crisis center, the lack of access to
good, affordable health care was at the top of the list. So we
decided to do something about it.”
Thus,
in 1972 a free clinic offering dental services to people
who were in need, yet could not afford such benefit, was
started by Masselli, joined by some dedicated people in the community
led by Reba Moses and Jerry Weitzman,
as well as a group of Wesleyan students. This center was, as it still
is today, dedicated to the ideal that “Health
Care is a Right, Not a Privilege.”
Today,
CHC has
expanded its operations from
downtown Middletown, Connecticut
to 13 primary care hub/cities and 201 service locations across the
state of Connecticut, delivering care to more than 130,000 patients.
CHC has also expanded its primary health care services not only in
dentistry, but also in medicine and behavioral health.
While
the Center's quality healthcare programs are for all, CHC is
specially committed to help the
uninsured, underinsured, and special populations such as patients
with HIV/AIDS.
Helping
the Community Health Center provide quality healthcare
service is its team of highly
motivated and talented healthcare professionals who care about making
a difference in the lives of others. They work in a a fast
packed, energizing place to work where professional camaraderie and a
deep sense of accomplishment pervade.
CHC's healthcare professionals are
compensated with competitive pay, provided with incentive
opportunities, great benefits that include medical, dental and health
insurance among others. They are also given opportunities for
professional development. Hence, CHC is able to attract the best and
the brightest to its team.

Today, November 16 is International Day for Tolerance 2015
November
16 is International Day for Tolerance,
an annual observance declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public
awareness of the dangers of intolerance. See more here:
On
its official website,
it is stated that on the
day of its fiftieth anniversary, 16 November 1995, UNESCO's Member
States adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. Among other
things, the Declaration affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence
nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety
of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being
human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and
fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only
tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every
region of the globe.
The Declaration
qualifies tolerance not only as a moral duty, but also as a political
and legal requirement for individuals, groups and States.
"On the International Day of Tolerance, let us recognize the mounting threat posed by those who strive to divide, and let us pledge to forge a path defined by dialogue, social cohesion and mutual understanding."
In
light of the very recent tragic attacks in Paris, the
ongoing conflicts, violence, discrimination happening here in the U.S. and
elsewhere in the world, this year's observance of the International
Day for Tolerance becomes more significant.
Promoting tolerance leads to deeper cultural understanding among the peoples of the world, forging closer ties and the celebration of diversity.
Overcoming racial and religious intolerance, and other forms of discrimination, is still as daunting as ever, yet there should be relentless efforts to do so.
Last week, it was reported that a segment on Fox News Monday about alleged racism at the University of
Missouri turned into two panelists shouting at each other and drowning
out host Megyn Kelly. - Read more at:

A candle in the dark. In the midst of the terror attacks in Paris on Friday night, one famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare and Co., acted as safe refuge for 20 of its customers. A sign on its walls reads: "Be not inhospitable to strangers lest they be angels in disguise." - Read more at:

Why Philadelphia's Veterans' Day Parade 2015 a Significant Event
Philadelphia
is known as the birthplace of American freedom and the US
Constitution; it played an instrumental role in the
American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of
the United States, who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776
and the Constitution in 1787.
Thus,
the city's Veterans Day
Parade this year, held on
Sunday November 8 is significant, but not for the above stated
historical facts. It was its 1st
ever annual Veteran Day Parade, a historic first for the city.
The
first annual Philadelphia Veterans Day Parade aired live Sunday
afternoon on 6abc. [...] Participants said it was about time. "This
should have been done years ago," said Robert Dager of
Sellersville, Pa. "They have parades for everything else. This
is more important than anything else: the veterans." -
Read
more at:
The
news report above also quoted Media, Pa. Mayor Bob McMahon:
"Philadelphia has not had a Veterans Day parade, really,
ever," said Media, Pa. Mayor Bob McMahon. "So this is
really exciting for us."
One opinion article published last
year echoed the sentiments of many who believed that Philadelphia
should have a parade to honor veterans, yet we have no city
parade for Veterans Day, Memorial Day and for over a century we have
not had a city parade to welcome the Philadelphia area troops home
from war. We have parades and celebrations to honor a Little League
team, the city’s unions, foul-mouthed rappers and pop stars.[...]
All of these events that close streets, tax city resources and demand
government attention, and nothing for the men and women who help make
it all possible by standing in defense of America. - Read
more at:
Some
citizens said that while it was okay to hold such other events, it
would not be asking too much to see that same effort to secure
resources, sponsorship, and the like expended to properly honor those
Philadelphians who went in harms way. It's a matter of
priorities.
So
how did Philadelphia get
its first Veterans' Parade?
SHORTLY
AFTER his appointment last year as director of the Veterans Advisory
Commission, Scott C. Brown noticed something that was missing.
Philadelphia had no veterans parade.[...]In his bones
and in his job, Brown knew that was just wrong and nominated himself
to raise the flag. First
to salute was U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, the political heavyweight with the
magic touch when it comes to All Things Philadelphia. - Read
more at:
Thus,
the Philadelphia Veterans Day parade took place during
the day, (Sunday) long overdue and very welcome.

Green Lights On for Veterans Day 2015 and Other Stories
November 11, 2015
is Veterans Day in the United States of America, as President
Obama officially declared in a signed proclamation:
I, BARACK
OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim
November 11, 2015, as Veterans Day. I encourage all Americans to
recognize the valor and sacrifice of our veterans through appropriate
public ceremonies and private prayers. I call upon Federal, State,
and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to
participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I call on
all Americans, including civic and fraternal organizations, places of
worship, schools, and communities to support this day with
commemorative expressions and programs.
Thus
around the country are the different events honoring and celebrating
military veterans: brave men and women of our Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard (who) demonstrate a resolute
spirit and unmatched selflessness, and
whose service reminds us there are few things more American
than giving of ourselves to make a difference in the lives of others.
This
year, a special way of honoring veterans is to turn on “Green
Lights” for them, a project spearheaded by Walmart.
As a
show of major support, Walmart is pushing for everyone to recognize
prior and active military personnel in a simple way. It’s called
“Greenlight A Vet” and is an initiative which could grow to be
one of the company’s most memorable projects. Military
Times reports that the veteran-friendly company has advertised
the project via national television, specifically during prime-time
hours. On November 11, Walmart is asking each of the nation’s
residences to replace one light within the household with a green
light. - Read more at:
The color is seen as a symbol of
hope, renewal and well-being. It is also a familiar signal to move
forward, one article says. Recognizing the contribution of
those who served and those who are serving is done in a wide range of
ways: From restaurant deals to parades and solemn ceremonies.
Installing a light bulb has the potential to be a visible reminder in
our neighborhoods about the service of men and women who dedicate and
risk their lives to make a difference. - Read more at:
One controversy though marks this year's observance of Veterans Day.,
according to a report by the Tulsa World.
The
Wednesday Tulsa Veterans Day Parade will have a new element this
year: controversy.
The controversy erupted when it became public that the Oklahoma
branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will have a float
in the parade. “It’s been unbelievable,” said Patsy Varnell,
vice president of the Tulsa Veterans Day Parade Association.“Lots
of phone calls, predominantly protesting (the inclusion of CAIR),”
she said. - Read more at:
Elsewhere,
special events and activities to observe Veterans Day have been lined
up or have started. There was one such event which can be considered
historic, too.
People
lined up early in Center City on Sunday to pay tribute to
Philadelphia-area veterans. The first annual Philadelphia Veterans
Day Parade aired live Sunday afternoon on 6abc. […] "This
should have been done years ago," said Robert Dager of
Sellersville, Pa. "They have parades for everything else. This
is more important than anything else: the veterans." - Read more at:

Diversity Issue Drove Twitter's Black Engineering Manager to Quit
Twitter's
Engineering Manager Leslie Miley has left Twitter, all because of the
way Twitter is dealing with diversity and inclusion, and wrote
about this in a post, “Thought on Diversity Part 2: Why Diversity
is Difficult,” TechCrunch reports.
A
particular low moment for Miley, he wrote, happened when he asked a
question at Twitter’s engineering leadership meeting about what
specific steps Twitter engineering was taking to increase diversity.
Twitter’s senior VP of Engineering responded, “diversity is
important, but we won’t lower the bar.” [...]Miley wrote
that he left Twitter feeling conflicted, as he sees Twitter as a
platform for empowering underserved and underrepresented people. -
Read more at:
An excerpt from
Miley's post reads:
During my time at
Twitter I experienced the pride and sense of purpose on seeing
#Ferguson and #blacklivesmatter on the most prominent wall at Twitter
HQ. This is something I will never forget.
And yet there were
moments that caused me to question how and why a company whose
product has been used as an agent of revolutionary social change did
not reflect the diversity of thought, conversation, and people in its
ranks. - Read more at:
In an
interview with Code Switch, during which he talked of his
recent decision to leave his job at Twitter — a job he loved —
citing frustration over the company's overwhelmingly white workforce
and internal resistance to changing it, Miley
said that recruiting is the best place to start for a company, like
Twitter, to address the issue of diversity, specifically to get more
diverse candidates. As it is, he revealed There's a
document at Twitter that lists the schools that Twitter wants to
recruit from.[...]It listed
Cal, Stanford, CMU, Waterloo, MIT, typical schools like that.
Never listed any state schools. Never listed any HBCUs. ...” - Read more at:
In
response to Miley's revelation of the company's approach to
diversity, a senior Twitter executive offered an explanation.
Engineering
manager Leslie Miley wrote that he was asked to build a tool that
would classify recruitment candidates' ethnicity by analysing their
last name. The idea was intended to improve diversity
among staff. Alex Roetter, Senior Vice President of Engineering, said
that the "engineering-driven, quantitative solution" was a
"blind spot". - Read more at:
