The University of New Mexico, Relying on Diversity As its Strength
One of DiversityWorking's latest
diversity company member is the
University of NewMexico, which
was established
in 1889 to serve as the state's flagship educational institution.
According to its website, UNM is the only Hispanic-Serving
Institution in the U.S. that is also classified a Carnegie Research
University with Very High Activity.
Part of the UNM's identity are its
age-old traditions, like its nickname Lobo, Spanish
for wolf, known and “respected for his cunning, feared
for his prowess, and is the leader of the pack. It is the ideal name
for the Varsity boys who go forth to battle for the glory of the
school...” Then
there
is the University Lobo Mascot which
started with a real lobo back in 1920. Today, two human mascots,
"Lobo Louie" created in the early 1960's, and "Lobo
Lucy" created in the early 1980's, are part of the school's
cheering squad. Other UNM's time-honored traditions are its colors
Cherry and Silver, the “Alma Mater” and and the Fight Song.
Its
commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in the diversity of its people,
including the studentry - a cross-section of cultures and
backgrounds. As
of
fall of 2013, 28,644
students were enrolled at the main campus, while 7,609 students were
at branch campuses and education centers. Under
its employ are more than 20,000 people statewide, including employees
of University Hospital.
As
an equal opportunity employer, it hires
and retains a diverse workforce and is dedicated to the goal of
building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty and staff
workforce. We are committed to teaching and working in a
multicultural environment.
More
than just representational diversity, the University of New Mexico is
now moving beyond it towards promoting Inclusive Excellence, which is
integrating
diversity and excellence by bringing together diverse worldviews,
diverse research ideas and the ability to teach to multiple ways of
learning and knowing. In building Inclusive Excellence our students
are better prepared to work and interact in a diverse world.
As it grows more
committed to equity and inclusion, the University of New Mexico
continues to thrive.

Hewlett-Packard Stays Committed to Diversity
Hewlett-Packard
splits into two companies come November, yet even with this major
change, it stays committed to diversity.
Showing its
seriousness about tech diversity, Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday
announced there will be four women and two African-Americans on each
of the boards of HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the two
companies it will split into come November. Each company also will be
chaired by a woman, giving HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise two
of the most diverse boards in the tech industry. - Read more at:
In
recent interview with Peter High, a contributor for Forbes,
Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman had this to say about how
“things have progressed across
your time in Silicon Valley relative to the issue” of having more
women in technology:
I
have been in business for a while- I graduated from business school
in 1979 – and the progress of women from then to now does not feel
fast enough to many of us, but it is enormous progress.
[...]Technology has
been a bit slower because typically science, technology, engineering,
and math has fewer women. My view is companies have to be advocates
for STEM education and keeping girls interested and successful in
STEM all the way through college and graduate school. And then, we
have to work hard at hiring women out of college and graduate school
into HP and other companies because, as you go up the ladder in
companies, if you do not start with a great group of young people at
the start of their career, you will not end up twenty years from now
with a 50/50 mix of senior leaders.
On
having two African-Americans on the boards, Whitman said: I
am very proud of the boards we have put together. I should also
mention that they have two African-Americans on the board, and, as
you said, four women, and some fantastic other executives as well,
but you have to work at it. I think what you have seen in
Silicon Valley over the last several years is a recommitment to
making that happen. We are certainly on board with that.
As
with any major change, there is a downside and Hewlett-Packard is
also reported to have been cutting jobs such as in its Houston
facilities, “due to further corporate restructuring.”
Houston Business Journal
reports: Hewlett-Packard
Co. (NYSE: HPQ) recently notified the Texas Workforce Commission that
it has been cutting additional jobs in Houston.[...] However, some of
the affected employees could "find a new position elsewhere
within the company and/or transfer to another HP facility," the
letter reads. - Read more at:
