Microsoft Expands Diversity Reach to Lawyers with Disabilities
Microsoft stands firm on its
commitment to diversity. Despite challenges, it continues to strive

Recently, Microsoft has updated its “Law
Firm Diversity Program” in a bid to improve the diversity of the
minority lawyers in leadership roles in the law firms it deals with.
Then
in another move to foster diversity, an article by Melissa
Maleske on Law 360
says that: as a step in its drive to open a dialogue about lawyers
with disabilities, Microsoft’s legal and corporate affairs team
launched a study that found people with disabilities face unique
barriers on the road to becoming a lawyer. The team released the
results to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the enactment of the
Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26.
“The research in the area is pretty scant,” Snapp says. “To commission this study to bring things together from different places and to try to make things foot and tie was actually a pretty unique exercise for us. Sometime
before this, Microsoft announced its support for The Equality Act, a
comprehensive federal LGBT non-discrimination legislation.
“To create technology that empowers
the world, we need to reflect the diversity of the world,”
Microsoft said in a statement. “Supporting diversity, inclusiveness
and equal treatment is not just good for business, it is also the
right thing to do. That’s why we support the protections for LGBT

Microsoft Revamps Its “Law Firm Diversity Program”
Microsoft, one
of DiversityWorking's long-standing diversity partners, has revamped
its “Law Firm Diversity Program” in
a move to improve the representation of minority lawyers in
the leadership ranks of law
firms it deals with.
The
company’s Law Firm Diversity Program has been changed to offer
bonuses to 15 law firms it works with, based on how many attorneys in
positions of power are female, from racial and ethnic minorities,
openly LGBT, people with disabilities or military veterans. Microsoft
started the program 7 years ago and originally offered firms a 2
percent bonus on their billings if a set percentage of the hours they
billed to the company were worked by diverse attorneys. - Read more at:

felt this would be a way for the most senior leaders of law firms and
law departments to exercise tone at the top on diversity, not only
with words but with actions,” says Mary Snapp, Microsoft’s deputy
general counsel and executive sponsor of the legal and corporate

evolution of a very successful program, yet one that I think takes a
big, significant next step.”
Microsoft’s
hope is that the original version of its law firm diversity program
will continue to bear fruit and that the new approach will have a

Diversity Push for Tech Startups at White House Demo Day
Tech entrepreneurs who are relatively new
in the industry were given a much needed push for diversity by
President Obama in the recent White House Demo Day, which was
well-attended by 30 startup teams and several big leaders in the
industry including diversity company, Microsoft.
Obama spoke at the first-ever White
House Demo Day, an event that brought a handful of entrepreneurs
to Washington to showcase the products, services and applications
they are trying to build businesses around. The White House marked
the occasion by announcing a string of commitments from businesses,
investors, cities and universities aimed at furthering what the
administration is calling "inclusive entrepreneurship." -

The announcements come at a time when
the technology industry has been scrutinized for its lack of
diversity. On average, 30 percent of the tech industry workforce is
women, even though women make up 59 percent of the total workforce
and 51 percent of the population, according to US Census Bureau data.
As for the most-coveted spots at the top, only 14.3 percent of board
seats at the top 100 companies by revenue in June 2013 were held by
women, according to a survey by executive recruitment firm Korn
Ferry. Ten of those boards had no women directors in December of that

As part of the Startup America
initiative, the presidential Demo Day is designed to encourage an
all-inclusive entrepreneurship. In addition to the 30 startup teams
that are exhibiting their nascent technologies and ideas, a dozen
bigwigs are committing to workforce diversity. Box, a cloud storage
company, for instance, has committed to using the "Rooney Rule",
which essentially means at least one woman and one candidate from an
underrepresented minority will be considered for senior management

announced 116 new winners of the total Small Business Administration
prize. In 2015, $4 million was set aside for winners of this prize,
who usually receive $50,000 individually. Past winners from the 2014
Growth Accelerator Fund created or sustained more than 5,000 jobs and

Are STEM the Only Degrees Required for Tech Jobs?
Do
you want to work in a tech company, but do not have a STEM
degree? Fret not; nowadays, you can still land a job and work for
your dream tech company even with a liberal arts degree, surveys say.
A
liberal arts degree used to be considered as “useles” but it has
become much in demand in the tech world.
A
recent article by George Anders published on Forbes.com says this:
Throughout
the major U.S. tech hubs, whether Silicon Valley or Seattle, Boston
or Austin, Tex., software companies are discovering that liberal
arts thinking makes them stronger. Engineers may still command
the biggest salaries, but at disruptive juggernauts such as Facebook
and Uber, the war for talent has moved to nontechnical jobs,
particularly sales and marketing. The more that audacious coders
dream of changing the world, the more they need to fill their
companies with social alchemists who can connect with customers–and
make progress seem pleasant.
Creativity
in the tech world is in great demand, and as George Anders says: “Such
creativity can’t be programmed.” An example of a tech company
that Anders says has relied on holders of liberals degrees is Slack
Technologies, a computer software startup founded in 2009. It is
the company behind behind today's hottest team-based messaging
software.[...]For Anders, it's the fact that much of Slack's
braintrust aren't tech folks -- they're liberal arts people.
Co-founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield, who is a real person and not
one of Bertie Wooster's Drone's Club pals, studied philosophy and
history of science for his bachelor's and master's degrees. His is a

Last
year, Motherboard's Jason Koebler cited a report about tech jobs not
needing any bachelor's degree:
“A
new study published about the city’s technology workforce found
that roughly 44 percent of science, technology, engineering, and math
jobs in the city require at least a bachelor’s degree.[...]“Many
tech ecosystem jobs only require short-term or long-term on-the-job
training. By removing the barrier of a college degree, opportunities
in the tech ecosystem can potentially empower the 2.89 million New
Yorkers ages 25 to 64 who do not hold Bachelor’s degrees,” the
report states.
What
more, the tech jobs for non-degree holders even pay
an average of $27.75 an hour, about 45 percent higher than non-tech
jobs with similar requirements, Koebler
wrote in his article. -

The unpredictability

for example, that sociology grads made more money than biology grads.
