Housing Works: Fighting High on Diversity

Housing Works has one noble fight: to fight homelessness and AIDS. It was put up in 1990 by four members of the legendary AIDS activist group ACT UP—Keith Cylar, Charles King, Eric Sawyer, and Virginia Shubert in order to serve New York City's thousands of homeless people - men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS.

Why the name Housing Works? The founders believed that stable housing could help people afflicted with HIV live healthy, fulfilling lives, while preventing the further spread of the disease. Thus, it has since been fulfilling its mission through its 3 pillars of:
Advocacy - fighting for funding and legislation to make sure all people living with HIV/AIDS have access to quality housing, healthcare, HIV prevention information and other life-sustaining services, as well as legal protections from stigma and discrimination;
Services - These include, among others, stable housing, healthcare, meals and nutritional counseling, mental health and substance use treatment, job training, and legal assistance;
Entrepreneurial Businesses -  The concept is to be self-sustaining; thus Housing Works' social enterprise allows them to earn money to support their efforts and provide employment opportunities to the community in addition to fundraising.

Housing Works shares its commitment to diversity with DiversityWorking, hence it has partnered with it in their search for qualified, dedicated individuals who thrive in a vibrant, celebratory and diverse work environment, and love to make a difference in the lives of others. Housing Works indeed provides plenty of opportunities for that, in addition to other great benefits it offers.

Aside from employment, Housing Works also provides opportunities for volunteerism.

Truly, a healing community, to date Housing Works has provided lifelong services to more 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS since its founding.

Creating An Inclusive, Veteran-Friendly Work Environment

Many corporations and organizations have been doing their best to provide equal job opportunities for veterans; in fact, based on the latest employment situation report for March, the unemployment rate for veterans went down to 4.9 % from 5.3 % in February 2015.

While there is still much to be done to give or create more jobs for veterans, the challenge also lies for those already in the workforce. Cultural differences between military-trained personnel and civilians in the workforce are among the biggest sources of obstacles for both transitioning veterans and their civilian employers.

Thus, it is important for employers to create an inclusive, veteran-friendly work environment. According to an article recently published by The US News.com, employers need to be sensitive to the toughest aspects of transitioning from the military to civilian workforce. By simply being sensitive to this transition, managers can help their veteran employees, as well as the team and company, be successful. The article lists 4 tips:
  • Dismiss stereotypes. Veterenas do have a diversity of experiences and they served in different branches of the military; thus stereotyping does not make sense and is risky. For example, not all military veterans suffer or are suffering from PTSD.
  • Explain context and culture. As the work context and culture in the military and civilian worlds differ vastly, there is a need for employers to anticipate cultural differences, and be able to explain the “nuances” of work in the civilian corporate mileau. It is suggested that a “learning buddy” be assigned to a veteran to support his/her transition. Also an open line of communication is helpful for the new hires to acknowledge there may be some adjustments for both sides.
  • Don’t misinterpret the loyalty of veterans. According to the article, veterans have the capability and capacity to be loyal by being in the military, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be loyal to you if you don’t treat them well,”
  • Be a leader. - Veterans are used to military leaders who “serve to take care of their people and accomplish their mission, so civilian supervisors and managers really need to raise their game.”
The article, “Creating the Right Environment to Support our Veterans” says companies' efforts to provide veterans jobs should not stop at hiring, but to put into place the infrastructure to support the successful transition of veterans into the mainstream workforce. To create this infrastructure, we must first understand that while we use the term “veterans” generically to describe anyone who has served in a branch of the military, there are actually two distinct veteran populations that we need to focus on:
  1. Those individuals who were already in work environments, were called up for active duty, and are now attempting to return to the work place; and
  2. Career military individuals who have never worked in corporate environments - Read more here

Helping Veterans Recover, Access Education, and Get Jobs

Transitioning veterans often face a myriad of challenges as they re-enter civilian life and reflect on the next steps to take. They are also a significant part of the diverse population of the country. As noted by the Employment Situation of Veterans Summary released earlier by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014, 21.2 million men and women, or 9 percent of the civilian noninstitutional population age 18 and over, were veterans.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has a number of education and training programs aimed at preparing veterans for jobs. It also has programs for the rehabilitation of wounded and disabled veterans.

In addition, other initiatives are still being created, by the government and other resources, including revovery programs for wounded veterans.

Recently, President Obama launched a program in cooperation with the Department of Energy that seeks to train and provide solar jobs for veterans. An article by EcoWatch notes that there are nearly 17,000 veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who are working in the solar energy industry, and this initiative will all the more boost job opportunities for veterans. As the article continues, the solar industry in America is becoming increasingly diverse, with minorities, women and veterans representing a growing percentage of the workforce. - Read more here:

In the local level, one program seeks to help their new employees who are re-entering the civilian workforce from the military. “One of the things, as a service member, you get uprooted and moved every few years. You almost immediately help each other out: ‘Here’s the housing, here’s the educational experiences, here’s what you need to do,’” said Leland “Rocky” Rockstraw, associate clinical professor in the College of Nursing and Health Professions, who is a veteran of the Air Force. Rockstraw, who served for 11 years in the Air Force, is looking to help create that sense of community for veterans again with an employee/colleague resource group at Drexel. - See more at:

North Florida congresswoman Gwen Graham wants to put more resources into a Veterans Administration program that transitions those wounded warriors from military to civilian life. The VETS Act -- Veterans, Education, Training Act -- would require the Veterans Administration to work with existing nursing schools to create a curriculum to train veteran recovery coordinators. - Read more :

These are only some of the newer intiatives designed to help veterans start anew in the civilian world.

Tech Leaders Voice Support for Diversity & Anti-Discrimination

In separate moves, the tech industry has come out to voice its support of diversity and the passing of anti-discrimination laws in all the states.

Itself plagued with problems in diversity, Silicon Valley is determined to improve its image by addressing the lack of workplace diversity in the tech industry. In the recent Silicon Valley Diversity Brunch event in Palo Alto, CA, over 200 of the most powerful black leaders in Silicon Valley gathered en masse for the first ever Silicon Valley Diversity Brunch. They had come to discuss how to bring about change in an industry that has managed to keep minorities at an arm’s length for decades. Leaders from nearly every company of consequence, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Intel were in attendance. Read more:

In response to the passing of the RFRA in Indiana, which moved tech leaders to gather in support of gay rights, more than three dozen chief executives and other senior Silicon Valley leaders issued a joint statement on Wednesday, asking state legislatures to add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes to their civil rights laws, NY Times reports.[...] “Religious freedom, inclusion and diversity can coexist and everyone, including L.G.B.T. people and people of faith, should be protected under their states’ civil rights laws,” their statement reads. “No person should have to fear losing their job, or be denied service or housing because of who they are or whom they love.” Read more:

A similar bill in Arkansas seen as discriminatory to LGBTs was also the subject of protest: a national activist group took out a full-page newspaper ad -- in the heart of Silicon Valley, writes Michelle Quinn of Monterey Herald. She continues, The decision by the Human Rights Campaign to place the ad, with an enormous image of a sign saying Arkansas was closed for business "due to discrimination," is one of the latest signs of Silicon Valley's growing symbolic power for causes of all stripes.
