Nation Celebrates Memorial Day 2015

The nation honored the lives of fallen soldiers who died serving the country, with celebrations led by President Obama, on Memorial Day 2015.

President Barack Obama on Monday saluted Americans who died in battle, saying the country must "never stop trying to fully repay them" for their sacrifices. He noted it was the first Memorial Day in 14 years without U.S. forces engaged in a major ground war. - Read more here:

In his speech, he also paid tribute to the families of fallen servicemembers:
"Whenever I meet with our Gold Star families, like I did this morning, I hear their pride through their tears, as they flip through old photos and run their fingers over shiny medals. I see that their hearts are still broken, and yet still full of love. They do not ask for awards or honors. They do not ask for special treatment. They are unfailingly humble. In the face of unspeakable loss, they represent the best of who we are." Read more here:

Through the years, happy celebrations mark this day, such as parades, concerts, picnics and traveling out of town. However, one fact about Memorial Day, according to this article on South Florida Business Journal, is it wasn't really meant to be happy. The article continues: It's probably OK to say Happy Memorial Day, but the holiday was originally established as a solemn day of remembrance for the nation's war dead. It used to be called Decoration Day.

For most veterans as well, there is one special thing they would like the nation to know about Memorial Day, and do: remembering those who went before us."
"Memorial Day isn't about romanticizing war or worshiping military veterans. It's a day to recognize personal sacrifices of veterans and active military alike, regardless of their inclinations toward war," said Tech Sgt. Bill Monahan, an airman serving at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. "Too often today, ones political beliefs skew opinions on what constitutes honorable service so it is important to have a day where we can look back at who laid it all on the line."
Read more here:
Indeed, it would be a great disservice to the country if Memorial Day takes on a less than noble significance like treating it only as a day of recreation and enjoyment without remembering our fallen men and women who died defending the country from its enemies. Hence, while it is just proper to be merry as we enjoy our freedom today, it will also be worthwhile to offer our silent tribute and thanks for each of our fallen heroes.

What's Behind Tech Industry's Diversity Drought

Late last year, Rev. Jesse Jackson called for greater diversity in the tech industry during a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook and a standing room only talk inside Intel's Santa Clara headquarters, telling him to move Apple stores "to the ghetto" as well as urging companies to increase their diversity efforts.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, who believes education and opportunity are keys to providing minorities better chances in getting into diversity IT jobs, has constantly sought greater inclusion in the tech world of African Americans and other minorities, saying "There have been patterns of exclusion of Blacks and Latinos...It limits growth. Inclusion leads to growth,” a NBC Bay Area news story said.

His diversity pitch in the said meeting came after some companies reported dismal showing of diversity in their workforces.

Fortune came up with a summary of these reports. At least 14 tech companies have released data. In an effort to provide further clarity, Fortune has ranked them in individual categories and then again overall, using a point system. And as suspected, these companies are shown to be generally more men, white and Asian.

Gender diversity (overall): Mostly men than women
The top 3 companies in this category – most diverse to least:
  • Pandora (51% male, 49% female)
  • Indiegogo (55% male, 45% female)
  • eBay (58% male, 42% female)
Gender diversity (leadership only): Mostly men than women
The top company in this category – most diverse to least:
  • Indiegogo (57% male, 43% female), followed by
  • Apple, eBay and Hewlett-Packard (72% male, 28% female), respectively.
  • The rest have fewer women.
Gender diversity (technical workers only): Mostly men than women
The top 3 companies in this category – most diverse to least:
  • Indiegogo (67% male, 33% female),
  • eBay (76% male, 24% female),
  • Pinterest (79% male, 21% female)
Ethnic diversity (overall): Mostly white and Asian
Topping the list from most diverse to least are: Apple, LinkedIn, Intel

Ethnic diversity (leadership only): Mostly white and Asian
Topping the list from most diverse to least are: Apple, LinkedIn, Intel

Why fewer women and minorities?
A recent article notes some factors that contribute to a low percentage of women representation in tech, notably in leadership and technical roles -- that's when the numbers get downright depressing.
"Girls don't get as much opportunity to use computers," says Ariane Hegewisch, a study director for the Institute for Women's Policy Research. They also get fewer chances to explore subjects like mathematics or science, in part because of lack of encouragement, curricula that appeal more to boys than girls and a negative stereotype about girls' technical abilities.

Other findings of the study noted by the article above, include the following:
  • Few women with MBAs are likely to enter tech-intensive industries;
  • Women in business roles within tech companies are more likely to start at the entry level compared with men;
  • Women in Silicon Valley earn less than their male peers.

Another noted observation is many women who want to be stay-at-home moms tend to choose careers in education, nursing, social work and counselling, as these offer more flexibility than the typical technology job, according to Pew Research Center report, says one Forbes article. The article opines that the real reason is that most women clearly aren’t as interested in technology-related work as men are.

When it comes to minorities' presence in diversity information technology jobs one problem is pipeline. White and Asian men are much more likely to have access and take advantage of technical schooling that leads to jobs at tech firms than historically disadvantaged minorities. - See more here:

To address this,  the Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday will launch a push to increase African American representation in the tech sector. […] The CBC Tech 2020 initiative will launch Tuesday with an event featuring caucus members who will “outline diversity principles, discuss industry best practices, highlight African American students and entrepreneurs, and present legislation focused on increasing STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] education,” the group said last week. - Read more here:

San Francisco's Ethnic Diversity is Shrinking, New Study Says

While the American population is said to be increasingly getting more diverse, San Francisco's ethnic diversity is shrinking, a new study says.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a recent study says that if trends continue, San Francisco is headed in the opposite direction. In fact, the report from PolicyLink, a research and advocacy organization in conjunction with a University of Southern California program, says the white population in San Francisco is on a steady increase. Read more here:

This is a cause for concern, according toFred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, a community advocacy organization, the article above continues.

Another news article quotes Sarah Treuhaft, director of equitable growth initiatives at PolicyLink, a national social equity organization with an office in Oakland,“While the Bay Area economy is booming, rising inequality, stagnant wages and persistent racial inequities place its long-term economic future at risk,” which is revealed by the data of the PolicyLink report, done in collaboration with PERE (the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity at the University of Southern California). - Read more here:

Specifically, one place in San Francisco is exerting efforts to improve its diversity situation which in the long run will boost its economy.  Market Street in San Francisco's historic Tenderloin district is being groomed as "a futuristic Internet enclave," according to a CNBC report. The facelift for the long-neglected Tenderloin began in 2011. With Twitter considering a move south to Silicon Valley, Ed Lee, San Francisco's tech-friendly mayor, established a plan to keep the microblogging site in town and at the same time revive a lengthy stretch of Market Street that featured boarded-up buildings and a storefront vacancy rate of 30 percent. - Read more here:

The ethnic diversity of a place does affect urban planning as well. An excerpt from "Manifesto for an Intercultural Urbanism," reads:
"Here in America there’s still a significant "diversity deficit" in our thinking about urban planning and design. Champions of mainstream urbanisms are increasingly aware of this deficit. Robert Steuteville suggests that New Urbanists "need to work on their appeal to working class and minority groups." He calls for a "populist" urbanism that reaches beyond the creative class of white, educated young professionals."

Union of Concerned Scientists: Working with Science for A Healthier, Safer, Sustainable World

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), started on an interesting note, as a collaboration between students and faculty members of the University of Massachusetts Institute of Technology back in 1969, and has now grown as an alliance of citizens and scientists, all with one goal: working for science-based solutions and actions to build a healthier, safer, and sustainable world.

UCS's impressive leadership is headed by President Kenneth Kimmel, and Exec. Director Kathleen Rest. Together they lead their team of experts, scientists and members, all concerned citizens collaborating to advance science-based solutions to keep our planet healthy and safe for us and the generations to come.

Its history of accomplishments is just as impressive, and here are only some of UCS's achievements between 2010 to the present:
  • Plays key role in passing landmark emissions and fuel efficiency standards that will cut in half the global warming emissions of new cars and light trucks by 2025;
  • Helps convince California to require that at least one-third of its electricity comes from clean, renewable sources by 2020, setting an inspiring precedent for the nation;
  • Helps win international protections for rainforests that will keep at least 300 million tons of global warming emissions from the atmosphere each year;
  • Introduces a plan to cut projected U.S. oil consumption in half within the next 20 years.
The Union of Concerned Scientists is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and aims for workplace diversity, for it understands that diversity is a strength to be valued and developed, thus it partners with DiversityWorking in its search for qualified, committed individuals to join its strong diverse workforce that helps them carry out their noble mission.
