Importance of and Job Outlook for Diversity Human Resources Jobs

The human resources department is an important part of any business organization.

For small businesses and large conglomerates alike, the human resources or personnel function can be helpful for much more than simply processing payroll or handling the open enrollment season once a year. Human resources plays an essential role in developing a company's strategy as well as handling the employee-centered activities of an organization. See more here

This includes managing or overseeing a company's diversity efforts, although in many cases today, companies have a distinct diversity department. Nevertheless, diversity human resource jobs are indeed essential, and they are seen to grow, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, human resources jobs (human resources specialist or labor relations specialist) are projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Job prospects for human resources specialists are expected to be favorable, but those for labor relations specialists are expected to be less favorable. In May 2012, the median annual wage for human resources specialists was $55,800. The median annual wage for labor relations specialists was $54,660 in May 2012. Applicants must usually have a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field. However, the level of education and experience required varies by position and employer. Job Outlook and State of Diversity in the Homecare Industry in the US

The demand for a diversity homecare job is high, as the homecare industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the country.

According to the USA Today, the jobs with the largest expected growth are often those that benefit from America's changing demographics. In an interview with 24/7 Wall St., Martin Kohli, chief regional economist for the BLS, noted that the effects of an aging population, which has access to Medicare, "combined with innovations that provide new treatments" has led to increases in health care spending. In turn, more spending creates "a high demand for jobs to provide these services," he added. Read more here

In its Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that as to job outlook, employment of home health aides is projected to grow 48 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. The median pay for those in home health carejobs (home health aides) was $20,820 in May 2012, and there are no formal education requirements nor is work experience in a related occupation needed. See here

Thus, home care jobs are considered the worst paying fastest-growing in the US, and the state of diversity in the industry shows there are many women and minorities working in these jobs. The demographics of the home care industry continue to put it at the short end of the pay and benefits stick. “Politically, it’s not a group with a lot of power,” says Marquand. According to PHI, 91% of home care aides are female, 56% are non-white minorities, 24% of them are foreign-born, and 58% have a high school education or less. Read more here

New Study Shows Why Lack of Gender Diversity Assails Tech Industry

It is an established fact that lack of diversity assails the tech industry as shown by the workforce diversity data of big tech companies such as Google, Facebook and Apple, who are now seriously bent on improving the diversity makeup of their workforces and corporate boards. Recent data from those companies and others like them confirm what everyone has long known: Most of their employees are white and Asian men. Among technical employees, few are women, and even fewer are Latino or African-American as earlier reported. Read more here

However, a new study shows why there is lack of gender diversity in the field, and that only few women stay long in diversity It jobs, and not many are in a diversity executive job, and it is not about their education.

A Fortune article reports that a new study conducted by Catalyst shows that plenty of women are graduating with technical degrees – they just don’t want to work in the tech industry. Looking specifically at the gender divide in business roles within the tech industry, the nonprofit found that while 75% of MBA grads have a tech background, only 36% return to tech-intensive industries — like oil and gas or energy – after completing their MBA. Women MBAs are less likely than men to enter these industries to start, and they are more likely to leave tech-intensive industries quickly. “We found that no matter the job, these companies are a particular difficult place for women to work in,” said Catalyst’s research director and the study’s author Anna Beninger. Read more at

Thus, there is indeed a great need to be proactive in addressing this issue, and based on the Catalyst report, these are their recommendations on how companies can reverse these trends by attracting and retaining top female talent in business roles and becoming employers of choice for women:
  • Make sure men and women with equivalent credentials start out at equal levels, and a re paid equally and at a competitive rate with others in the industry.
  • Engage and empower senior male executives to sponsor up-and-coming women.
  • Make performance standards crystal clear.

Part Time Employment Now Up For the Holidays

The holiday season is just around, and so part time employment is up for the holidays especially in the area of retail and transportation. In the aftermath of the most devastating recession since the second world war, most retailers have bumped up their hiring slightly, while the package delivery companies, which had so much trouble last year with the flood of last-minute online shopping, are hiring about twice as many people as last year. Nationally, big chains are calling for huge numbers of employees, and many are for temporary jobs for the season. Read more here:

Tis the season for spending money on Halloween stores, fruit farms, pumpkin patches, landscaping, or lawn care. However, it won’t be long before the consumer focus switches to Christmas tree farms or Harry & David gift baskets. Such is the nature of seasonal businesses. They come and go in a hurry, based on holidays, weather, or customer preference. The seasonal businesses provide temporary employment for thousands of Licking County residents at various times throughout the year, but more seasonal jobs are available in the fall than any other time. Read more here

An excerpt from the article: The Workforce Part-Time Employment Ratio: Looking Better for the Core Age Group, gives some analysis:
In July 2012 and again in August 2013 the full-time/part-time gap narrowed, and it was yet narrower this summer. Even more encouraging is that fact that the bounce in part-time employment last month was the smallest September increase in this history of this BLS data series, which dates back to 1986.
Obamacare and Part-Time Employment
Over the past two years many have speculated that the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) has played a role in company decisions about full-time versus part-time employment. The $2,000 per employee penalty for companies that do not comply with regulations has influenced some to rethink their employment policies. In July 2013 the government pushed the start of the penalty from January 2014 to January 2015. But the anticipation of the penalty, even though delayed a year, may influence the decisions of private employers.

Legal Industry In Need of Diversity as Career Opportunities Seen to Grow

Diversity is an essential need even in the highest court of the land, and in the country's law firms. It was reported U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor expressed concern Saturday about the lack of diverse legal and life experience among those who sit on the country's highest court. Thomas noted that all nine Supreme Court justices attended either Yale or Harvard University. He said everyone should be concerned that the nation's highest court has "such a strong Northeastern orientation." Sotomayor said the court has many lawyers from big law firms, but not as many from middle courts.

Meanwhile, diversity was a big topic at this year’s Philadelphia Bar Association Bench-Bar Annual Conference in Atlantic City, N.J., wherein best practices to create and maintain a diverse and inclusive law practice that offers equal opportunity for advancement for all, with the goal of eliminating bias from business development, client relationship management and procurement. One of the panelists, Albert S. Dandridge III, chancellor-elect of the bar association, said that the first way to create a more diverse law firm environment is to recognize that you have a problem. You next need to get buy-in from firm leadership to do something about it. Read more:

The legal industry offers vast career opportunities as legal jobs are expected to prosper well into the next decade. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of lawyers is projected to grow 10 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for lawyers was $113,530 in May 2012.

Likewise, paralegal jobs are seen to increase as well. Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 17 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted. This occupation attracts many applicants, and competition for jobs will be strong. The median annual wage for paralegals and legal assistants was $46,990 in May 2012.

An LGBT Call to Diversity and Inclusion in Corporate America

Many LGBT individuals are extremely talented and they excel in diverse fields including the creative arts, television, music, sports, politics among others. We can think of Clay Aiken, Michael Sam, Elton John as some of the big names in their fields. There is also Catherine Feely, a military veteran who is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in kinesiology. She plans to land one of the healthcare jobs working as a physician's assistant after graduation.

Recently, a financial news article came out with a call to diversity and inclusion of LGBTs in Corporate America: The tides are turning in popular consensus: It's time for Corporate America to get some gay pride, says author Steve Siebold. Fortunately, the definition of "diversity" is evolving to include people from minority sexual orientation groups alongside people who were more traditionally considered minorities in other ways. Companies recognize that gay and lesbian employees are no different from any others: There's absolutely no correlation between sexual orientation and job performance. Some of the most skilled people in many industries are gay or lesbian, and in a competitive labor market, a smart CEO needs those people to feel comfortable working at his or her company rather than at the competition.

Indeed, the inclusion of talented LGBT individuals makes good business sense and greatly contributes to a company's workforce diversity, as the article above says, on two fronts: it attracts the widest pool of talent while also positioning the company, in the eyes of the public, as an open-minded, progressive organization that truly embraces the diverse population in the communities in which it does business.

However, it is still a sad reality not many LGBTs are able to access equal job opportunities, and many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees feel they can't be open about their sexual orientation at work, according to activists. Thus it is suggested that gay CEOs lead the way, to set the tone in their respective organizations to make the workplace a safe inclusive welcoming place for LGBT employees. See more here:

For LGBT job seekers, joining diversity job fairs is a good means to connect with diversity companies in search of qualified, skilled LGBT individuals to work for them.

Manufacturing output increased in May and factory activity in New York State accelerated sharply this month, buoying hopes of a strong rebound in economic growth this quarter, the New York Times said in its news report.

Today, however, the manufacturing industry is becoming more high-tech and innovative. When it comes to High-Tech Hubs, it seems like everyone has woken up at the same time with the same epiphany: the surest path to sustainable growth rests on a solid foundation of high-technology enterprises, Business Facilities reports, and this includes advanced manufacturing which involves a number of old-line industries who’ve made major investments to revolutionize their production lines with the latest high-speed technology, improving quality and efficiency at the same time. This implies a demand for qualified skilled manufacturing job workers and factory job workers in the field of advanced manufacturing and this was already noted even way back in 2011. Key industries for advanced manufacturing are automotive, aerospace, electronics, medical devices, plastics, food and beverage, and defense/military. As advanced manufacturing emerges from the Great Recession, the biggest challenge is not finding capital for expanding operations or upgrading equipment, or even finding more customers - it's finding skilled workers who can handle the new equipment and advanced processes on the manufacturing floor. Now that manufacturing jobs are said to be moving back to the US from China, it is all the more essential to narrow or eliminate the “skills gap.” Large manufacturers are increasingly moving production back to the United States from China, according to a new report by The Boston Consulting Group. The Boston-based global management consulting firm said the online survey was conducted across a wide range of industries, from electronic and computer equipment to transportation machinery, petroleum refining, apparel and food products.
